Tabriz is the capital of Azerbaijan, which lies in the mountainous region of northwest Iran. This is one of Persia's largest rug-producing regions, which exports all qualities of rugs, from the simplest to the most luxurious. The highest-quality rugs are divided into 2 main categories. One is Tabriz Mahi, which is also called "Tabriz with fish patterns" (the rugs arched leaf pattern is called "Mahi", which means "fish"). The other is Tabriz Nagsheh, which means "pattern" and refers in this insta nce to the figural patterns from Keshan and Isfahan, from which inspiration for the rugs was derived.
